Add a downpipe diverter, connect a sealed barrel (with mosquito screen), and route overflow back to a drain or into soil.

Easy≈200–300 L per stormSuitable for renters
Materials
  • Rain barrel (200–300 L) with lid & screen
  • Downpipe diverter kit (matching pipe size)
  • Flexible hose (25–32 mm) + hose clamps
  • Overflow elbow and tubing to drain/soil
  • Pavers or stand to raise the barrel
  • PTFE tape, silicone sealant
Tools
  • Measuring tape, marker
  • Hacksaw or pipe cutter
  • Drill + hole saw (per kit spec)
  • Level, safety gloves, eye protection
Safety & Risks
  • Secure the barrel against tipping; keep lid locked (child safety).
  • Do not drink stored water; label 'Non-potable'.
  • In freezing climates: drain and disconnect for winter.
Maintenance
  • Clean screen quarterly; flush sediment yearly.
  • Check diverter and hoses after major storms.
  • Disinfect with vinegar if odor/algae appears.
Permits / Notes
  • Check HOA/VvE facade rules for visible barrels.
  • Backflow prevention may be required if connected near potable systems.
Steps
  1. Measure downpipe height; mark diverter position per kit.
  2. Cut the downpipe and install the diverter; ensure arrow points downflow.
  3. Place the barrel on a flat stand; higher = better tap pressure.
  4. Connect inlet hose from diverter to barrel’s side/top bulkhead.
  5. Install overflow from barrel to drain or a planted area (never onto walkway).
  6. Open tap to test; check for leaks and secure the lid/screen.
